The Marine Big 5

Experience the Marine Big 5

As experienced travelers, we are all very familiar with the impressive Big Five (lion, leopard, African elephant, buffalo and rhinoceros) and rightly so, as it tops many a bucket list.

However, if you think that is extraordinary or perhaps you have already ticked it off the list, even more spectacular animals await to be discovered in the ocean. The coastal waters of South Africa’s Western Cape, accommodate a rich diversity of species of which five spectacular marine fauna,  make up the Marine Big Five. They are the great white shark, the southern right whale, the bottlenose dolphin, the Cape fur seal, and the African penguin.

Dyer Island, is located 8 km from Gansbaai, on the Western Cape and is an access controlled Important Bird Area (IBA) for the conservation of its many resident bird species, including African penguins. Adjacent to Dyer Island is Geyser Rock, home to a 60,000 strong Cape fur seal colony.

For your Marine Big 5 experience, you will be taken by boat into the channel of water between Dyer Island and Geyser Rock known as the world famous ‘Shark Alley’. You will then be taken to the whale hot-spots in the bay. With over a decade of experience, not only do your guides know where to expect the best whale viewings, but the whales have also learned where to expect you!

In order to experience the Marine Big 5, we highly recommend staying at Grootbos Private Nature Reserve. A superb, award winning, family-run private nature reserve set on the fynbos-clad hills above Walker Bay. 27 luxurious suites are divided between two lodges, set amongst ancient milkwood trees overlooking a majestic sweep of coastline.

At Grootbos, you will be able to engage and experience the Marine Big 5 like never before through guided coastal safaris and a chance for intimate encounters in this aqua wonderland.

In addition, there are plenty of other activities and experiences for both adults and families alike available during your stay including Botanical 4×4 tours, horse riding, walking and hiking, fat bike tours, bird watching and coastal safaris.

Food and wine are taken very seriously at Grootbos. Expect delicious, freshly produced dishes and one of the best wine cellars in Africa.
